About
Odinic Southern Gard is an established Odinic community based in New South Wales, Australia, formed around continuity, structure, and lived practice.
Our roots extend across decades of shared tradition, shaped by those who came before us and carried forward through consistent observance, community, and responsibility. What exists here is not newly formed, but maintained.
As an incorporated religious association, our role now extends beyond internal structure into outward service. This includes the development of programs, support for individuals seeking direction, and the continued preservation of tradition in a modern context.
We do not present ourselves as an interpretation or reconstruction, but as a living continuation—grounded, structured, and carried forward with intention.
Our History
The origins of Odinic Southern Gard trace back to the modern establishment of Odinism in Australia in the early 20th century, and the founding of the Anglecyn Church of Odin in Victoria by Alexander Rudd Mills (A.Rud Mills/Tasman Forth) and his supporters in the early 1930s.
By the early 1940s, participation within the Church of Odin had grown to well over one hundred regular attendees. During this time, some members and their families sought to carry these beliefs and practices further north. From this movement, a small Odinic community formed within the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales, taking on the name Southern Gard.
From its earliest years, the community held a clear intention: to maintain continuity with the foundations laid by early Australian Odinists, while placing renewed focus on historical sources—particularly the Eddas, sagas, and other early recorded traditions. This marked a shift away from earlier emphases on church structure and politics, and toward nature, lived practice, and folk community.
Across more than eighty years, Southern Gard has experienced both growth and adversity. Through each period, its continuity has been maintained through the passing of knowledge, responsibility, and tradition from one generation to the next.
Today, Odinic Southern Gard continues to stand as a living continuation of that foundation—carried forward with respect for those who came before, and with a clear intention toward what remains ahead.
